NORTH MUSKOKA – Be the difference someone needs this holiday season with donation to Community Living Huntsville’s housing programs, services, and initiatives on Giving Tuesday.

“Housing insecurity and homelessness is the most pressing issue facing people and families we support. Apartments are disappearing, rent is astronomical, and cost of living is skyrocketing. So many marginalized community members we support are struggling to find, afford, and maintain places to live,” says Jennifer Jerrett, Community Engagement Specialist, Community Living Huntsville. “Our team is dedicated to empowering people and families in choice and inclusion, so everyone can live a life of dignity as a respected, valued, and contributing member of their community. Having a place to live is an absolute necessity for that.”

Wait times for affordable housing in Ontario are 10 times longer for people with developmental disabilities, and 18 to 30 per cent of chronic emergency shelter users have a developmental disability, according to OASIS.

Giving Tuesday, which follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday, is an annual day of giving that urges people to contribute to meaningful change by directing their generosity toward nonprofits. In 2022, it falls on November 29.

Community Living Huntsville’s 2022 Giving Tuesday campaign will help fund its innovative action on housing, including its Transitional Housing Initiative and housing-related programming, for people with developmental disabilities and families it supports. Thanks to the generosity of a matching donor, all contributions made to the campaign will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $5,000.

“Our team is thinking outside the box to create new tools and solutions. Our Transitional Housing Initiative offers unhoused young men we support a roof over their heads while they complete skills-building and housing-related programming toward finding and maintaining a place of their own,” says Jerrett. “That’s just one example. But these creative solutions rely on fundraised dollars, donations, and charitable grants, if they are going to continue to change lives. Help us surpass our $10,000 goal.”
