Canada has a long history with large institutions and the deinstitutionalization process. Through first-person accounts from policymakers, deinstitutionalization experts, and the lived experience of people with disabilities who lived in multiple institutions, this side event to the United Nation’s 14th session of the Conference of States Parties to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities provides a space to discuss lessons learned from Canada’s deinstitutionalization process.

Welcoming Remarks: The Honourable Bob Rae, Ambassador and Permanent Representative-Designate of Canada to the United Nations in New York

Introduction: Robin Acton, president of Inclusion Canada & Kory Earle, President of People First of Canada

Moderator: Connie Laurin-Bowie, CEO, Inclusion International

This event will feature several panelists to discuss their experiences with institutions and the deinstitutionalization process followed by a short Q&A period with people in attendance.
